Coconut production increased in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's coconut harvest this year has increased significantly, an official at the Coconut Research Institute has said.

Dr. Jayantha Gunathilaka, Director of the Coconut Research Institute in Lunuwila , has said that the coconut production in the country has increased by 38 percent this year from last year's production.

The last year's production was at 2.8 billion nuts and the official expects this year's harvest to be around 3 billion nuts.

However, the prolonged drought may slightly decrease this year's harvest in October, the Director cautioned.

The government in 2010 approved a fertilizer subsidy that was given to paddy farmers to the coconut growers as well.

A 50 kg bag of urea and potash fertilizer was given to all coconut growers at a subsidized price of Rs 1000.00 per bag to increase the coconut production in the country. The fertilizer subsidy costs the government 2.28 billion rupees annually.
