The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) of Sri Lanka plans to increase water tariffs shortly.

Chairman of the NWSDB, Karunasena Hettiarachchi has told a Sinhala daily newspaper that the Board would be increasing water tariffs soon.

He has explained that the water tariffs have not been increased for three years and that the Board is now compelled to increase the rates.

According to Hettiarachchi, the increase in the cost of electricity, the depreciation of the rupee and other costs have added to the expenses of the NWSDB and the Board has therefore decided to increase water tariffs.

However, the extent of the tariff increase has not yet been revealed.
